Background of the Study

Mental health issues among students are becoming a growing concern worldwide. Stress, anxiety, depression, and other psychological challenges affect students’ academic performance, social interactions, and overall well-being (WHO, 2024). School-based counseling programs play a critical role in promoting mental health awareness by providing students with psychological support, coping strategies, and guidance on mental well-being.

In Kano State, the awareness of mental health issues remains relatively low due to cultural stigma and inadequate mental health services (Ibrahim & Yusuf, 2024). Many students struggling with emotional and psychological distress do not seek help due to fear of discrimination. School-based counseling programs are a potential solution to address these issues, but their effectiveness in Kano State remains largely unexplored. This study examines the impact of school-based counseling programs on mental health awareness among students in Kano State.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the increasing prevalence of mental health challenges among students, many schools in Kano State lack structured counseling programs. The stigma surrounding mental health further discourages students from seeking help (Adepoju & Salami, 2024). Additionally, limited resources and untrained school counselors hinder the effective implementation of mental health awareness programs.

This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of school-based counseling programs in improving students' mental health awareness and addressing common psychological challenges in Kano State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of mental health awareness among secondary school students in Kano State.
  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of school-based counseling programs in promoting mental health awareness.
  3. To identify the challenges faced in implementing school-based mental health counseling programs.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of mental health awareness among students in Kano State?
  2. How effective are school-based counseling programs in promoting mental health awareness?
  3. What challenges affect the implementation of counseling programs in schools?

Research Hypotheses

  1. School-based counseling programs have no significant impact on students' mental health awareness.
  2. There is no significant relationship between counseling services and students’ mental well-being.
  3. Implementation challenges do not significantly affect the success of school-based mental health programs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on secondary schools in Kano State, examining how counseling programs influence students' mental health awareness. Limitations include variations in counselor training, differences in school policies, and cultural perceptions of mental health.

Definitions of Terms
